You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down
We all face adversity at one time or another in our lives, and how we handle the circumstances of life speaks volumes of our inner man and woman. In the book “As a Man Thinketh”, author James Allen shares the idea that circumstances do not make the man, they reveal him to himself. And when we consider how a Godly person might handle adversity, we can turn to the Bible, or consider today’s quote.
“You can’t keep a good man down.” – American Idiom, Author Unknown
While we are not sure where the quote “You can’t keep a good man down” originated, there have been countless songs published and recorded over the past century – yes I said century. The first known recording of the song was composed by M. F. Carey and sung by Dan W. Quinn in 1904 on Victor Records. Here is the original courtesy of The Library of Congress Jukebox and Sony Music Entertainment.
Over the past 100 years various “You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down” songs have been written and recorded, and eventually adapted to the story of Jesus. Just check out Youtube.
Although it’s not found in the Bible, it is Biblically true that there is no way to keep a good man or good woman down. Yes, there may be times where we are down, but for the believer, we are never out. There are many Biblical examples of those who have faced adversity only to overcome, like the patriarch Joseph, or David, or Peter, or Paul. But the greatest example is Jesus Christ Himself, who was crucified and put “down” in the grave, only to rise on the third day. Granted, that we are not Jesus, or any of the examples we find in the Bible, but we share in the same promise that if God be for us, there is nothing that can prevail against us. No, you can’t keep a good man or woman down.

Hallelujah Christ Arose
Happy Easter and Resurrection Day! Up from the grave He arose, with a mighty triumph over His foes – that is our theme for today. And today’s quote goes along with it:
“Hallelujah, Christ arose!” – Low in the Grave He Lay, Robert Lowry, 1874
This is the most significant tenant of the Christian faith and the reason for celebration not just today, but every day. This quote comes from the old time hymn “Low in the Grave He Lay” by Robert Lowry. This hymn may be 140 years old, but the message is just as clear today as it was back then, just as the message of the Gospel is the same as it ever was. So here is a contemporary version of the Lowry song singing Hallelujah Christ arose.
Have a happy and blessed Easter Sunday!
Lyrics to Low in the Grave He Lay (He Arose)
by Robert Lowry (1826 – 1899)
Low in the grave he lay, Jesus my Savior,
waiting the coming day, Jesus my Lord!
Up from the grave he arose; with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
he arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever, with his saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
Vainly they watch his bed, Jesus my Savior,
vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord!
Up from the grave he arose; with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
he arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever, with his saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!
Death cannot keep its prey, Jesus my Savior;
he tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord!
Up from the grave he arose; with a mighty triumph o’er his foes;
he arose a victor from the dark domain, and he lives forever, with his saints to reign.
He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!

Jesus Loves the Little Children
As we raise children in the Christian faith, a common theme resounds in how we teach them about the love of God and their relationship with Jesus. One of the most popular children’s songs heard in churches and homes is Jesus Loves Me (this I know for the Bible tells me so). As children, the world can be a scary place, and we work hard to reassure them that they are truly loved.
“Jesus loves the little children.” - Bible or Not?
While this popular church phrase is based upon Biblical principles, it is not in the Bible – it’s a children’s song. Here are the full lyrics to the song, and below is some history about its origins and of course a Bible reference.
Jesus Loves the Little Children Lyrics
By Clare Herbert Woolston
Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world.
Red and yellow, black and white,
All are precious in his sight,
Jesus loves the little children of the world.
The Bible reference that inspired the song comes from the Gospel of Matthew: “But Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven’.” (Matthew 19:14 NKJV). The words of Jesus Loves the Little Children were written by Chicago pastor and preacher Clare Herbert Woolston (1856–1927) and it was put to the tune of an 1864 Civil War song “Tramp! Tramp! Tramp!” written by George Fredrick Root.
Over the years many variations of the lyrics have been introduced, all still with the same enduring message to our children, that Jesus loves them.
