A Good Name is Better than Fine Perfume
What’s in a name? Everything. But I’m not talking about just the name, I am talking about the reputation behind the name – that is the meaning of today’s quote. We can look at famous people and decide who is sincere, fake, kind-hearted, mean, honest, deceiving, virtuous, sinful and the list goes on.
A good name is better than fine perfume. – Ecclesiastes 7:1 NIV
And then we look in the mirror. Whether we like it or not, people make judgments about us every day. Perhaps you don’t realize it, but every interaction you have with another person, however small, creates your reputation. I am not looking to put pressure on you, but we should all realize that we are building our “name” every single day.
What is your reputation at work? Are you hard-working and trustworthy? What about school? Do you run with the party crowd? How about church? Are you known as a Godly person both inside and outside of the church? Do you practice what you profess to believe?
OK, enough of the questions. The point is that each day we are building our “name”, our reputation. The fact that it is the work of others, those who see and interact with us, that creates our reputation is out of our control. But what we can control are the actions we make each day that reveal our character, and demonstrate to those around us who we are and what we believe. If you are truly a good person, then you will build for yourself a good name. And a good name, your good reputation, is so much better than fine perfume or precious ointment.

A Love Greater than a Mother’s
![]()
Bible or Not wishes all mothers a Happy Mother’s Day! Where would we be without our mothers? The love and protection a mother affords her children goes beyond understanding, and is so indomitable, that it is the measuring stick for the greatest love you could find. Even in the animal kingdom we talk about the fierceness of the ”momma bear” that will go to any length to protect her cubs. For those of us who have experienced the love of a mother, we can only say thanks.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!” – Isaiah 49:15 NIV
Unfortunately we know from the Bible, and from watching the news, that there are those in this world who have not experienced that kind of love. As great as the love of a mother may be, there are times in our fallen world when it breaks down. But there is an unfailing love from God that is there for everyone. His love is so great that he will NEVER forget, leave or forsake His children.
Today we honor YOU, our mothers who have loved us, have raised us, and have made us who we are today. We thank God for you and pray that He blesses you.
But let’s not forget the orphans and those whose lives have been difficult, who have not felt the love of a mother or father. Let’s reach out to them to let them know that there is a God in heaven who loves them more than they can imagine.

They Sow the Wind and Reap the Whirlwind
I was recently watching The History Channel and discovered a new quote for Bible or Not. We find the concept of the justice of God, that you reap what you sow, quite clearly in the Bible. And oftentimes we’ll hear this concept in church and even in the news, when considering crimes that are committed. And we hear it from leaders during times of war.
“They sow the wind, and reap the whirlwind.” – Hosea 8:7
Today’s Bible quote was made famous during World War II by Sir Arthur Harris (Bomber Harris), the British Marshal of the Royal Air Force during the war, in reference to Nazi Germany. Bomber Harris is quoted as saying, “They have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind”. We all know of the outcome of the war, and that Germany did indeed reap the whirlwind.
So it is today to those who commit crimes against God and humanity. If they sow the wind (unrighteousness), they will reap the whirlwind (destruction). The justice of God will always prevail. Do you agree? Leave a comment, our readers would love to know what you think.
